Vaibhav Suryavanshi
has demonstrated to the global cricket community yet again that age is merely a figure and with exceptional talent, nothing can limit your potential. Throughout each era, we see a standout performer emerge from domestic cricket, and lately, it’s the
Indian Premier League
This is where the talent has the chance to display their abilities on a larger platform for a broader crowd. At just 14 years old, he broke numerous records with his remarkable 35-delivery hundred, leaving the cricket community astounded. Competing in his inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign at this tender age, Vaibhav secured his place in the annals of history as holder of the second-quickest century ever recorded in the league’s timeline.

Nevertheless, ex-India coach Greg Chappell has delivered a significant caution to the BCCI regarding the management of Vaibhav. India has seen the meteoric ascent of this young wunderkind.
Sachin Tendulkar
, yet it has also seen figures such as
Vinod Kambli
and
Prithvi Shaw
failing to reach their actual capabilities.

Sachin Tendulkar excelled during his teenage years not just because of his natural ability but also thanks to strong backing—a calm demeanor, an astute mentor, and a family that shielded him from distractions. In contrast, Vinod Kambli, who possessed equal skill and possibly even greater flair, found it challenging to juggle stardom with self-discipline. His decline mirrored the intensity of his initial ascent,” wrote Chappell in his piece for ESPNCricinfo. “Prithvi Shaw represents another prodigy who faced setbacks but might still reclaim the top spot.

Kambli and Tendulkar emerged simultaneously on the cricket stage; however, it was the latter who went on to become one of the greatest players in the sport’s history. Meanwhile, Kambli faded into relative obscurity as a talented but underappreciated player. Known as the “Master Blaster,” Tendulkar etched his name deeply into cricket lore throughout an outstanding career, accumulating a staggering tally of 34,357 runs internationally across Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20s (T20s). His record includes 15,921 runs from Test matches and 18,426 from ODIs. Additionally, he participated in one T20 International match where he scored 10 runs.

On the contrary, Kambli could participate in just 17 Tests and 104 ODIs. Upon joining, he saw significant improvement and made history as the first Indian batsman to score back-to-back double hundreds in Test matches, hitting 224 against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium followed by another 224 against Zimbabwe in Delhi. Despite these achievements, his inconsistent performances led to a truncated stint with the national side. Off the pitch, Kambli struggled with personal management and fell into alcoholism, leading to various health problems over recent years. Last December, his deteriorating state required hospitalisation, though he was released after more than a week of treatment.

Prithvi experienced a significant decline in his career following his recognition as a child prodigy in Mumbai when he was quite young. In 2018, he captained India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup, yet nowadays, he doesn’t feature prominently in considerations for the national side. Meanwhile, those who once played alongside him—Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh—are now established superstars in the cricketing arena. Similarly, Prithviraj Shaw began his international journey impressively by hitting a century during his first match against West Indies. At one point, he was projected to lead Indian cricket’s next generation. Nonetheless, issues related to discipline, health problems, and controversies severely hampered his progress. This past year, these setbacks culminated in his failure to secure an offer in the IPL auctions and resulted in going unselected altogether. Interestingly, a promising youngster named Vaibhav has taken center stage despite being just fourteen years old.

“Talent can’t be bubble-wrapped”

The seasoned Australian cricket player emphasized the significance of nurturing young talents correctly.

“These tales do not doubt the potential of young people, but they criticize the approach taken in fostering—or exploiting—that potential,” he said.

Chappell instructed the BCCI, IPL franchises, and media outlets to look after Vaibhav rather than exploiting him through marketing tactics. Instead, they should concentrate on fostering his abilities.

It falls upon the cricketing community – including the BCCI, teams, coaches, and media – to safeguard this talent,” he stated. “While we cannot encapsulate them entirely from experiences, we should provide support systems for their growth. They require guidance rather than mere adulation; they need cultivation instead of being solely promoted.
