HALIFAX – Colby Barnett’s goal in the sixth minute proved decisive as AFC Toronto secured a 1-0 victory over Halifax Tides FC on Saturday in the Northern Super League.

An unmarked Barnett coolly struck a volley past Tides’ goalkeeper Erin McLeod following a lofted pass from Nikayla Small, giving Toronto (2-2-1) an early advantage at Wanderers Grounds.

Nikki delivered an absolutely flawless shot; in my head, all I thought was, ‘Don’t mess this up, don’t mess this up,'” stated Barnett, who netted her inaugural goal in the NSL. “Being on the opposite end felt great, and I completely understand now why forwards enjoy it so much.

Currently, Toronto is riding a three-match undefeated streak and shares the second spot with Ottawa Rapid FC and Vancouver Rise FC, each team accumulating seven points. However, Ottawa has competed in one fewer match.

Halifax (0-3-1) currently sits at the bottom of the NSL table and is yet to secure their initial win for this season’s opening campaign.

In Toronto’s performance, they maintained 51 percent of ball control and had a lead of 10-7 in shots attempted, with 4 on target compared to their opponent’s 2.

“We keep working and improving. At this stage, we’re not overly worried about our record—whether it’s after a loss or a win, our focus remains on getting stronger. The more effort we invest, the clearer this progress becomes every week,” stated Toronto’s head coach Marko Milanovic.

Following that, Halifax will head to Vancouver on Wednesday, whereas Toronto will make their way to Montreal for a game against the leading Roses FC team on Thursday.

The report from The Canadian Press was initially released on May 17, 2025.
