TORONTO — Drake has circulated a petition urging for a pardon of Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, after reports indicated that Lanez had been stabbed while incarcerated recently.
On Friday, Drake posted an Instagram Story mentioning Lanez with the message “come home soon” alongside a link to a petition called “Pardon Tory Lanez: Urge Governor Newsom to Rectify a Grave Injustice.”
Lanez, also known as Daystar Peterson, is presently incarcerated for a 10-year term due to shooting hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion in the foot.
The petition calls for California Governor Gavin Newsom to grant a pardon to Lanez, citing “substantial proof of improper conduct by prosecutors, absent forensic information, and sentencing influenced by political motives,” according to his legal representatives. By early Saturday, it had collected 233,208 signatures.
Officials stated that Lanez was admitted to a hospital on Monday after being assaulted at the California correctional facility where he is incarcerated.
Although they didn’t share specifics about the attack, an Instagram post attributed to Lanez stated that the artist was stabbed 14 times and experienced collapsed lungs as a result.
The update stated that Lanez is now able to breathe without assistance.
It isn’t the first instance where Drake has shown backing for the imprisoned rapper. In December, during a live stream with American online celebrity Adin Ross, Drake lifted a drink and paid tribute to Lanez saying, “Three up T, man. Three up T,” thereby expressing his stance onLanez’ freedom.

“Three” serves as a wordplay, intended to signify “free” and also denote the numeral three, representing released handcuffs.
Previously, Drake expressed his backing for Lanez in February of the previous year by sharing an Instagram Story that included a picture of the rapper along with the caption, “3 you.”
