The explosions at military installations in Crimea play a crucial role in enhancing Ukraine’s security. According to Andrii Kovalenko, who leads the Center for Countering Disinformation, Russia utilizes the peninsula as a major military hub.

“Russia views Crimea as a military outpost, just like during the Soviet era, which poses a direct risk to maritime traffic. Additionally, attacks on Ukrainian cities are being launched from the Russian-controlled peninsula,” he emphasized.

Kovalenko stressed that the demilitarization of Crimea, specifically explosions at military installations, is solely a component of Ukraine’s national security.

Explosions in Crimea

On the evening of May 2, explosions echoed across multiple areas in Crimea. Reports circulating online suggested a significant drone assault on Sevastopol, with claims that the Kacha airfield within the city had been struck.

Social media platforms also documented explosions in Hvardiiske, home to a military airbase. Users shared information regarding an assault on a military installation along with an ammunition dump in the vicinity of the town.

Explosions were reported in multiple locations including Feodosia, Yevpatoria, Dzhankoi, close to the airport in Simferopol, in Novofedorivka which houses the Saky airfield, and various other towns.

The Russian Defense Ministry asserts that their air defenses purportedly brought down 121 drones, with 89 of these incidents occurring above Crimea and 23 taking place over the Black Sea.
