SAN FRANCISCO — Jony Ive, designer of some of Apple’s most popular products, will join ChatGPT maker OpenAI to help create products that make it easier to use artificial intelligence.

Ive and OpenAI have announced their collaboration.
Wednesday in a video
whereas Ive, known for his work on Apple’s designs such as the iPhone, along with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, mentioned that current devices like laptops and smartphones do not simplify access to AI chatbots sufficiently.

“I am completely convinced that we are at the dawn of a new era in technology,” Ive stated in the video.

This collaboration, involving the fusion of OpenAI and Ive’s firm known as IO, highlights OpenAI’s strategy to establish itself not only as a provider of backend solutions for various enterprises but also as a prominent consumer-facing brand. This move escalates its rivalry with well-established industry leaders such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple—organizations where Ive gained prominence due to his collaborative relationship with one of Apple’s cofounders, Steve Jobs.

I departed from Apple in 2019, following three decades with the firm.

OpenAI hasn’t specified which projects Ive will tackle, but the video shared on Wednesday suggested that one of them could involve a new piece of hardware.

If I needed to query ChatGPT at this moment,” he remarked as they sat together in a San Francisco eatery with Ive, “I’d retrieve my laptop…. In my opinion, this technology warrants far more than that.

OpenAI is not the only technology company trying to make chatbots and AI easier to access. Several of them have billions of existing users, while OpenAI is still a novelty for much of the world. ChatGPT has 400 million weekly users, the company has said.

Google unveiled

This feature allows individuals to utilize the company’s AI capabilities for real-time translation of their conversations across various languages, project directional guidance onto the actual environment, and browse online data related to whatever they’re observing. Apple is currently focusing on incorporating AI technologies into iPhones and other devices. Similarly, social media leader Meta is increasing its investment in AI tools as well.

The Wall Street Journal
reported
The agreement between Ive and OpenAI entails OpenAI acquiring IO for $6.5 billion worth of its shares. When contacted for comments, an OpenAI representative declined to respond. It’s noteworthy that The Washington Post maintains a content collaboration with this firm.

Ivand and Altman mentioned in their video that they were already developing a new product, though they didn’t provide details about it.

“I’ve been putting a lot of effort into the first project, and it has really sparked my creativity,” Ive stated. To emphasize the magnitude of his vision for the product, Altman commented, “In my opinion, this will be the most amazing technological innovation the world has ever witnessed.”
