We informed you that Hannam Supermarket, one of Metro Vancouver’s most recognizable Korean grocery stores, was considering a new site in the Royal Oak district of Burnaby.
As of last week, the new store has officially opened for business.
Situated at the intersection of Imperial and MacPherson, this newly established location has taken over the space previously occupied by Craftsman Collision. It represents Hannam’s most recent growth initiative within the South Burnaby neighborhood.
Hannam Supermarket, which opened its doors in 1998, was the initial big Korean market in Western Canada.
It added a distinctive Korean touch to North Road Mall, which led to the emergence of Burnaby’s own K-town.
Although the Metrotown branch is considerably more compact compared to the expansive North Road outlet, do not be misled by its size, as it has quickly become quite popular.
On the third day since they opened, we stopped by and found the shop teeming with people, stretching all the way from the cash registers to the sparse area where cars could be parked (fun fact: consider walking or finding parking spots on the metered streets nearby).
Inside, it has a smaller floor plan compared to other Hannam branches, yet all the necessary elements are present:
- Fresh produce
- Instant noodles
- Meat cuts ideal for Korean barbecue
- Chips, ice cream, and frozen wontons
- Ready-made items such as broths and seasoned meats
They have also provided well-known brands and essential items from Korean pantries, however, you shouldn’t anticipate finding an extensive bakery, deli, or hot food station.
During our visit, the prepared food area was either lacking stock or entirely cleared out, with no trace of kimbap or japchae remaining.
Despite this, the store was abuzz during opening week, attracting customers with significant discounts on products such as Turtle Chips and various snacks.
If you’re accustomed to the vast expanses of Hannam North Road, adjust your expectations because this new location is designed with locals’ daily shopping needs in mind rather than large-scale Costco-style purchases.
Nevertheless, this new store is a valuable addition to Burnaby’s expanding Asian food market, offering local residents near the Metrotown/Royal Oak area easier access to Korean products without needing to go all the way to North Road or over to H-Mart.
Hannam Metrotown now joins the ranks of T&T, PriceSmart, and Club Ribbin (formerly Assi Market), transforming South Burnaby into a highly competitive arena for Asian supermarkets.
