President Donald Trump has signed numerous executive orders since his return to the White House about four months ago, but several of these have been halted—at least for now—by judges serving in the lower federal courts.
Trump and many of his appointees, including Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, are claiming that the judges are failing to honor the powers of the U.S. governor’s executive branch. And Trump’s critics are countering that the judges are exercising the checks-and-balances powers they enjoy under the U.S. Constitution.

James Comey’s mysterious ‘8647’ does not signify what supporters of Trump claim it represents.
Stone points out that under the Trump administration’s intensifying conflict with the judiciary, over 200 lawsuits have contested various executive orders and policies related to topics such as immigration enforcement, penalties for law firms associated with political opponents, budget reductions within agencies, staffing cutbacks, and additional areas. This surge in legal challenges has led to more than 100 executive actions issued by President Trump and other measures being temporarily suspended or blocked due to court decisions made by jurists appointed by both Democratic and Republican presidents, including some nominated by Trump himself. Former judges and legal professionals increasingly caution that the aggressive rhetoric employed by Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and supporters of Make America Great Again is fostering an environment that jeopardizes the security of judicial officers and their loved ones.
The president of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, John Jones, thinks that the vilification of federal judges by MAGA Republicans is rendering them vulnerable.
Jones said to The Guardian, “Trump and his associates continually distort court decisions as politically motivated, along with launching unfounded, harsh, and personally offensive assaults on specific judges. This distorts how the public views the operations of the federal judiciary. Such criticisms create an environment where the security of judges and their loved ones becomes highly precarious.”
Judges who question Trump aren’t just dealing with violent threats; they’re also being subjected to criminal charges. On May 13 in Milwaukee, Judge Hannah C. Dugan was taken into custody for supposedly aiding an unauthorized migrant in evading apprehension.

Nancy Gertner, a law professor at Harvard University located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, stated to The Guardian, “The manner in which the Milwaukee judge was arrested—including her public procession in handcuffs, the remarks made by the FBI director and the Attorney General—significantly deviated from standard procedures and norms. This seemed deliberately aimed at intimidating fellow judicial officers without any valid reason.”
