The individual who was taken into custody in April for allegedly firebombing a synagogue in December has had their request for bail rejected and will stay in detention until the conclusion of their trial.
In early April, Mohamed Ilyess Akodad, who is 19 years old, was taken into custody by the Montreal police after being identified as a potential culprit involved in the firebombing incident at Congregation Beth Tikvah, a synagogue located on Westpark Boulevard in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, which occurred on December 18.
Since his apprehension, he has remained in custody. On Thursday, he appeared for a bail review at the Montreal courthouse presided over by Quebec Court Judge Salvatore Mascia. As per judicial documents, the judge rejected Akodad’s bid for freedom following an evidentiary session throughout the day and consented to schedule a procedural hearing towards the end of July.
Akodad is facing six charges, which include mischief, arson with indifference to human life, and arson resulting in property damage.
On December 18th around 3 a.m., a firebomb was thrown through a window of the synagogue. Upon arrival, the initial law enforcement officers managed to douse the flames using an extinguisher. Additionally, they discovered that earlier that very day, somebody had smashed two windows at the Federation CJA building located directly opposite the synagogue.
