The Montreal Police report that seven individuals were taken into custody during a May Day demonstration which became chaotic post-8 PM on Thursday within the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

The protest against capitalism started around 7:15 p.m. close to the intersection of Hochelaga Street and Préfontaine Street, as stated by police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron. According to him, demonstrators hurled items at law enforcement and obstructed their way.

Following the arrest of a man in the crowd at 8:30 p.m. for hindering a law enforcement officer, protesters started hurling fireworks at the police, as reported by Bergeron. In response, officers used pepper spray and apprehended an additional six individuals, who now face accusations of using weapons during their attack.

By 8:35 p.m., the gathering had dissipated.

The report will undergo updates.
