Each year, more than 91,000 people receive a diagnosis of cancer in Canada.

In reaction to this critical health concern, the

Canada’s inaugural mobile screening vehicle for melanoma and skin cancer has returned to service this season. Now with two such units operational, the program seeks to motivate people to examine their skin frequently and safeguard themselves against these conditions.

“We’re urging people to examine their skin and apply sunscreen, but the Mole Mobile is also addressing a significant gap within our community,” explains dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll.
Due to the scarcity of dermatologists throughout Canada, the Mole Mobile plays a vital role in early detection and averting serious illnesses or fatalities.
“Falyn Katz, CEO of Melanoma Canada, explains to The Weather Network that there’s a significant lack of dermatologists in Canada. With just 800 specialists serving a population of 40 million, scheduling a skin cancer screening often takes considerable time. In many instances, patients may face waits ranging from six months to a year, and sometimes even longer,” says Katz.
“As long as it’s detected promptly, it becomes manageable,” explains dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll.

The mobile unit will journey through British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, providing screenings on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dr. Carroll clarifies, “We invite you into the examination room, where we inspect for any irregularities. Should we discover something worrisome, our extensive network allows us to refer you to the appropriate specialists to ensure proper management.”
I agree that relying on mobile solutions isn’t a long-term fix for this issue, but our aim is to bring attention to it and make changes… We want more dermatologists across Canada to perform screenings so individuals can receive diagnoses sooner. With early detection, we have the potential to save lives,” states Katz.
