From the cross atop Mont Royal to the
Orange Julep
Montreal’s landmarks are integral to the city’s character. However, this week, one of Montreal’s distinctive symbols is shining a bit uniquely—and for an excellent cause.
The
Farine Five Roses sign
, a constant feature of the cityscape since 1948, is currently displaying only one word. This isn’t an error; rather, it’s a gesture of homage.
The newly formed professional women’s soccer team in Montreal, the Montreal Roses, has made its debut.

The continuous modifications ought to elicit a distinct type of response.
Every evening up till May 6th, just the word “ROSES” illuminates in shades of red and blue, with the remainder of the sign staying unlit. This act, marking the first instance where the sign has been modified to back a sports team, serves as an acknowledgment both of their name and their cause.

Until now, the members of the Roses have been delighted with their successful partnership with the flour company based in Quebec.
This legendary sign has illuminated the Montreal sky for decades. It holds great importance for the players, supporters, and every young girl aspiring to play professionally, serving as a powerful symbol of recognition and presence. As stated by Roses goalkeeper Gabrielle Lambert in a press statement, “Our position is firmly established right here, prominently showcased at the center of both the city and the sport.”
The moniker ‘Roses’ embodies resilience, innovation, and progress—the principles we uphold daily through our collective efforts,” stated Annie Larouche, the team’s president. “Observing this name honored on such a legendary emblem of Montreal conveys a strong message to young females throughout the city: their aspirations should glow with equal brilliance.”
The Montreal Roses are among the original teams in the league.
Northern Super League
The inaugural season of Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league will kick off this spring. The league has crafted their name, emblem, and attire to mirror the city’s cultural essence and identity. Specifically, the team’s distinctive font was inspired directly by the iconic Farine Five Roses sign.
Within their home stadium, Stade Boréale in Laval, fans can also discover a replica of the sign that was previously located there.
