On Wednesday, OpenAI declared the $6.5 billion purchase of IO, a tech design firm established by ex-Apple design head Jony Ive, reigniting speculations that the business aims to develop an AI-focused smartphone.

Best known for their role in designing the iPhone at Apple, Jony Ive along with 55 other designers transitioning from Industrial Oversight (IO) will assume control over creativity and design across all aspects of OpenAI. As reported by a source,

This will involve overseeing the design of various components, including future iterations of ChatGPT, as well as audio functionalities, the application interface, and additional products, said individuals acquainted with the situation.

Established following my departure from Apple in 2019, IO initially aimed to create a range of AI-driven innovations. Speculation about the collaboration between OpenAI and IO suggests it might focus on this area.

Last month, IO refuted the rumors about an upcoming phone, whereas OpenAI chose not to comment on the matter.

The Wall Street Journal reported in their document that sources close to the situation suggest they are developing “a new gadget intended to take users past traditional displays.”

OpenAI and Ive have apparently been collaborating on undisclosed product lines over the last two years, with considerations extending beyond just phones.

“Im sensing a mounting realization that all my knowledge accumulated over the past three decades has brought me to this point,” Ive stated in an official announcement regarding the acquisition.

It’s unclear whether this purported screen-less smartphone will become available for purchase in today’s market. Modern consumers might find it difficult to accept a device incapable of displaying content such as TikTok videos. Although there has recently been a trend towards less distracting “basic” phones, these users appear unlikely to seek out features heavily focused on artificial intelligence.

A spokesperson from OpenAI did not promptly reply to requests for comments.
