Regarding his upcoming comedy movie, “Jafaican.”
In the movie, Chris Rea, known as the hitmaker of “The Mysterious Girl,” portrays the character Gary Buckle (Gazza), described as a cunning and mischievous wheeler-dealer. At 52 years old, he takes on this role where Gazza attempts to amass £35,000 to cover his grandmother’s nursing home expenses.

Following an early wave of enthusiasm, Jafacian quickly faced backlash on social media, where many were puzzled about why this movie—reminiscent of productions from the 2000s—is being made. The film has been labeled as ‘racist’ by some critics, and one person went so far as to call it the ‘modern-day equivalent of blackface.’
‘For every single negative comment we received about X, we were getting hundreds of positive remarks.’

‘We recognize if someone truly feels offended. Certainly, their concerns should be acknowledged, which was definitely not our aim.’
‘Anyone who knows me understands I wouldn’t harm a fly. It was intriguing to see them view the character I’m portraying as nearly being myself.’
Director Fredi Nwaka refrains from labeling the reaction to the trailer as ‘backlash’—though there are certainly varying viewpoints.
“I don’t view this as backlash; instead, I see it as a topic for discussion. In my opinion, anything that encourages or sparks conversation and debates is beneficial. Everybody has their own viewpoint,” he states while seated next to Pete during a Zoom call.
“I’ve never explicitly stated this before,” starts Pete, “but everybody is aware that in Australia, I released a major hit titled ‘Get Down On It,’ originally by Kool & The Gang. I rereleased it in 1996, and it became incredibly popular down under.”
‘Because I’m wearing a wig, and this wig is styled as an Afro. This has been popular for decades.’
‘Certainly, by then, if there were any issues, they would have stated, “We cannot proceed. This is not appropriate”.’
He goes on: “If nobody from Jamaica has raised concerns about our film during the production process, and the producers who conducted all necessary checks haven’t mentioned anything… how could I possibly assume that uploading a trailer onto a platform would be offensive to anyone?”
Meanwhile, Pete is prepared to have his mind changed.
“You can’t remove something from someone if they are truly upset about it. However, it appeared that many individuals were uncertain about what exactly was offending them. This aspect left us somewhat puzzled.”
The sequel to Jafacian is already in the works, with Pete set to play a different character from a different country.
‘This is something we want to develop for our own small chain,’ he explains.
