For President Donald Trump’s detractors, one of the most concerning aspects of his behavior is his provocative assaults on the media—whom he refers to as “the enemy of the people.” Despite this, Trump seeks out attention constantly and has been seen frequently tuned into Fox News during his time at the White House.

The Guardian’s David Smith characterizes the exaggerated “media blitz” that Trump is conducting during what would be his second term as president.
In the last three and a half months,” Smith states, “the U.S. president along with his team has initiated an unyielding media campaign characterized by crude rhetoric, attention-grabbing strategies, sensational video content, and provocative social media posts designed to provoke. By leveraging various platforms and influencers, they circumvent conventional news sources to communicate more directly with their MAGA supporters. This approach allows them to overshadow dissenters, incite adversaries, and irritate global counterparts.

According to Smith, Trump has transformed the White House into something akin to a content provider.
“The evolution of presidential communication has been significant,” notes the Guardian correspondent. “In 1913, Woodrow Wilson initiated the first presidential press conference. Franklin D. Roosevelt used radio to deliver casual ‘fireside chats’ during the Great Depression and World War II, explaining initiatives like the New Deal directly to Americans. John F. Kennedy utilized television for real-time speeches, notably during the Cuban Missile Crisis. As an ex-actor, Ronald Reagan took pleasure in delivering televised messages, which led him to be called ‘The Great Communicator.’”
Smith goes on to say, “Barack Obama was the pioneer in utilizing platforms like YouTube and Twitter widely, conducting online town halls and circumventing conventional media outlets. In contrast, over the last ten years, Trump has merged traditional methods with modern technology; he engaged in classic in-person rallies while simultaneously being highly active on Twitter throughout his first term—where an emphatic all-caps tweet had the potential to lead news stories, influence stock markets, or disrupt international relations—and currently uses his own platform called Truth Social.”
Tara Setmayer, who founded the Seneca Project and identifies as a Never Trump conservative, likens Trump’s media events to those of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but her comparison isn’t meant positively.
Setmayer said to The Guardian, “Donald Trump has consistently grasped the essence of mass communication and the influence of propaganda, making his political ascent and triumphs historic milestones in terms of effective propaganda use. His approach has utterly overturned all notions of decorum, sophistication, and dignity within presidential discourse. Essentially, he is transforming how presidents communicate into something akin to professional wrestling: characterized by dramatic visuals, juvenile behavior, and extreme antics.”

Setmayer went on, “It appears these factors overshadow the significance of truth and the respect owed to the position. It highlights how utilizing the influence of the bully pulpit to address both the American public and global audiences has become less impactful.”
