Richmond RCMP Seeks Witnesses After Alleged Attempted Kidnapping and Vehicle Fire

The police are looking for witnesses and dashcam recordings following an alleged attempted abduction in Richmond, where someone reportedly pretended to be a law enforcement officer.

According to a statement from the Richmond RCMP, the event was followed by a car fire.

They mentioned that a female stated three individuals came up to her approximately at 4 p.m. on Monday, close to a neighborhood sports complex located near the 4300 block of No. 3 Road.

The victim stated that one of the men had an item labeled “police” and was also carrying a handheld radio. She mentioned that a fight broke out, but she managed to escape, according to the police explanation.

According to the statement, the suspects departed in a black Jeep Cherokee bearing an Alberta license plate. The police mentioned that the car was found ablaze around 10 p.m. that night within the 13000 block of Vulcan Way.

The police indicated that the incident seems to have been intentional.

Inspector Michael Cohee, Officer-in-Charge of Richmond RCMP Investigative Services and Community Engagement, stated in the release that the public might have concerns about the revelation that one of the suspects claimed to be an officer.

If someone claiming to be an off-duty police officer approaches you, it’s fine to request ID to confirm their identity.

Searching for witnesses

The police are seeking to interview two possible witnesses, whose images have been made public.

The initial witness had on a black jacket, a blue shirt, white trousers, and white running shoes, additionally holding a white and black umbrella.

The second person to testify was dressed in a grey jacket, grey trousers, white sneakers, and black eyeglasses, and they had a pink handbag with them.

“Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, a media relations officer with the Richmond RCMP, stated that individuals were observed passing through the vicinity during the reported attempted abduction,” she noted in her official statement.

The police are seeking individuals who were nearby or might possess dashcam recordings from the area around the 4300 block of No. 3 Road between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., or near the 13000 block of Vulcan Way during two time frames—between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and again between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
