US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted a telephone discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During their talk, Rubio conveyed a message from US President Donald Trump.
In his discussion with Lavrov, the U.S. Secretary of State expressed approval for the prisoner swap deal that was finalized during negotiations between Ukraine and Russia on May 16 in Istanbul.
Rubio also conveyed a clear message from President Trump.
“The United States is dedicated to bringing about a permanent resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The detailed peace proposal put forth by the U.S. lays out the most effective path ahead,” Rubio stressed.
The Secretary additionally highlighted President Trump’s urging for an instant cessation of hostilities and an end to the aggression.
US-Russia talks
Earlier today, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs verified that Lavrov had spoken with Rubio. Nevertheless, the peace plan was not discussed during their conversation.

Following the discussion, U.S. President Donald Trump declared a number of significant telephone conversations planned. He mentioned his intention to converse with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine on Monday, May 19th.

Talks in Istanbul
On May 16, representatives from Ukraine and Russia convened in Istanbul for talks. The discussions lasted over an hour as they explored potential solutions to cease the conflict in Ukraine.
