On May 17, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Vatican might host upcoming peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

In Rome, before his meeting with Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who serves as the Vatican’s representative for Ukraine-related matters, Rubio addressed journalists. He stated that their discussion would cover “the current state of negotiations, the latest developments from Friday, along with the next steps moving forward,” as reported.

When asked if the Vatican could serve as a peacemaker, Rubio replied: “I wouldn’t refer to it as a mediator, but it’s definitely—a place where both parties might feel at ease meeting.”

We will discuss everything mentioned above, and as usual, we appreciate the Vatican’s readiness to assume this helpful and upbeat position.

During his visit to the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Rubio had discussions with key figures from the Vatican diplomatic corps, such as the secretary of state and foreign minister. At this gathering, Rubio expressed gratitude towards Zuppi for the Holy See’s humanitarian actions, which encompassed aiding in prisoner swaps and assisting in the repatriation of Ukrainian youth. A statement made by U.S. State Department representative Tammy Bruce indicated that Rubio highlighted the significance of maintaining cooperation moving forward under Pope Leo XIV’s fresh administration.

Pope Leo XIV, the inaugural U.S.-born leader of the Catholic Church, has committed himself to ensuring “this peace prevails” through personal efforts. During his initial Sunday sermon since becoming pope, he reinforced his predecessor’s plea for tranquility, encouraging all parties involved to strive towards an “authentic, fair, and enduring peace.” Additionally, Pope Leo XIV has convened meetings with Eastern Rite Catholics, such as representatives from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, advocating for direct talks among conflicting entities.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who serves as the Vatican’s Secretary of State, stated that the Holy See continues to be prepared to facilitate direct negotiations. He mentioned, “As we’ve consistently conveyed to both parties, we remain open to assisting you, ensuring complete confidentiality,” reported the Associated Press. Cardinal Parolin described the breakdown of the May 16 Istanbul discussions aimed at achieving a ceasefire as tragic and remarked, “The objective has been—and still is—to get them talking. We will wait and observe what unfolds next. The location is offered.”
