The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Moscow plans to draft a document outlining conditions for a ceasefire in Ukraine. According to CBS News and Clash Report, Kyiv will develop a comparable document as well.
On Saturday, Rubio spoke over the phone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
“He informed me that they plan to create a preliminary document detailing their conditions for a ceasefire, which would subsequently pave the way for more comprehensive discussions. Clearly, the Ukrainian side will also develop its own proposal, and we hope this will be presented shortly,” Rubio stated.
The U.S. envoy stated that should the propositions put forth by Russia and Ukraine prove to be both serious and feasible, this would signify genuine advancement, allowing further steps to be taken accordingly. As such, only time will tell how these developments unfold.
Rubio voiced optimism that the Russian proposal would align closely with what the Ukrainians desire.
“But he made sure I was aware, during our conversation, that his team will be focusing on developing a set of proposals and conditions they deem necessary for advancing toward a ceasefire and subsequent talks. We will wait for this input, and ideally, it’ll be detailed enough to align closely with what the Ukrainians are seeking so that these discrepancies can potentially be resolved,” the Secretary of State clarified.
In the course of the discussion, Rubio mentioned that U.S. President Donald Trump aims to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the earliest opportunity. He added that Russia has likewise shown willingness for this encounter.
Now comes the task of gathering all stakeholders and determining the location, timing, and conditions for the meeting to occur.
