Borys Babin, an analyst with the “Reintegration of Crimea” association, stated in the RBC-Ukraine article titled “Trump reshaping the game: Why Crimea has emerged in peace discussions,” that the Russian Federation is insisting on acknowledging Crimea as part of its own territory to hinder efforts aimed at concluding the comprehensive conflict.

These are merely tactics aimed at derailing the negotiations and endorsing the belligerent stance of the Russian government.

Because these demands go against international law, it’s akin to asking someone to put out the sun. This makes it clear to everyone involved that such requests won’t be taken seriously,” explained the expert.

He mentioned that both European leaders and some members of U.S. President Donald Trump’s team comprehend Russian strategies. However, considering the varying statements from the American president, it seems that the contest over his stance remains ongoing.

Babin suggests that discussing the recognition of Crimea benefited Ukraine because it showed the global community that autocrat Vladimir Putin is unwilling to seek peace. Concurrently, the United States’ aim to conclude the conflict swiftly might lead to the most challenging matter of Crimea being sidelined in serious discussions.

Issue of Crimea

Crimea is a peninsula located in southern Ukraine. In 2014, Russia took control over it through what was called a referendum, which occurred amid a show of military force. This takeover has been deemed illegitimate by the global community, with the majority of nations continuing to regard Crimea as an integral part of Ukraine.

Not long ago, Reuters released a peace proposal from the U.S. The documents presented by both America and Ukraine-Europe share many similarities; however, they also have notable discrepancies. As per Washington’s concept, the United States intends to legally acknowledge Crimea as part of Russia.
