Bowie, MD (AP) — Following over 25 years of excitement and enjoyment, Six Flags America along with Hurricane Harbor near Washington, D.C.’s Maryland outskirts will be closing down at the conclusion of this season.
The roughly 500-acre (202-hectare) site located in Bowie is set to undergo redevelopment, as revealed by Six Flags Entertainment Corporation on Thursday. During their portfolio evaluation, the firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina concluded that these amusement parks do not align with their future expansion strategy. According to a statement from Six Flags’ President and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman, this decision was made following an assessment of the company’s direction. Operations at the park will cease permanently on November 2nd.
“Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor have played a significant role in our local community, and this last season offers a chance to commemorate the countless hours of enjoyment visitors have experienced here,” Zimmerman stated.
Approximately 70 full-time employees work at Six Flags America, and the company stated that eligible workers will receive severance packages along with other benefits.
A nature reserve functioning at the location during the 1970s was eventually transformed into an entertainment park.

It launched as Six Flags America in 1999, stated a representative from the firm. This amusement park boasts numerous attractions and rides, with nine being roller coasters. Among them is The Wild One, which stands out as one of the nation’s most senior wooden roller coasters, noted the spokesperson.
Acting Prince George’s County Executive Tara H. Jackson expressed sorrow over the loss of the parks.
For many years, Six Flags has transcended being merely an amusement park; it has become an integral part of our county’s character, a place where families find happiness, and a focal point for economic prosperity,” stated Jackson. “We are dedicated to collaborating closely with Six Flags and other involved parties to facilitate a well-considered and inclusive revitalization effort that promotes employment opportunities, stimulates development, and ensures lasting benefits for the community.
