Jaydev Unadat pinpointed the cause of SRH’s decline during the 2025 IPL season to weak bowling performances and alterations in the pitch conditions that limited their playstyle. Known as one of the most thrilling squads in the 2024 IPL, Hyderabad captivated global cricket fans with their highly aggressive batting approach.

Nonetheless, the performance of the bowlers significantly contributed to enabling the teams to successfully pursue large targets on the even pitches during the previous year. In this current season, however, the bowling has not been up to par. Mohammed Shami, acquired for a substantial sum, has yet to find his rhythm whatsoever, and thus it was

apparent during the defeat against GT

Captain Pat Cummins has likewise found it difficult to make a significant impact with the bowling, as all the key bowlers have an economy rate higher than 8.

Following the GT defeat at the press conference, Unadkat stated that for an IPL team to succeed, 3 to 4 bowlers must perform well in every match. The left-arm seamer emphasized that similar to batting, bowling requires collaborations, which Sunrisers Hyderabad hasn’t managed effectively this season.

In my time playing in the IPL, I’ve noticed that for a team to perform successfully, there needs to be around three or four bowlers contributing consistently in each match. These consistent contributions from multiple players seem essential for securing victories. This year though, our team appears short of such balanced support among the bowlers; when two bowlers step up with good performances, the others aren’t always aligning their efforts effectively. It’s similar to how we analyze batting partnerships.

I believe this applies to bowling too since poor performance from both sides leads to undue stress on one’s partner. Consequently, our strategies end up changing, which haven’t quite worked out for us yet. So indeed, we must acknowledge responsibility for failing to be the top bowling team in the competition.

If you aim to triumph in matches, perform excellently for your squad, you must excel, but we haven’t been doing so up until now. I cannot claim that there’s something missing from our practice sessions, preparation activities, or training routines.

“As we’ve seen on the field, things can occasionally falter during execution; however, as mentioned before, in tournaments such as the IPL, statistics reveal that when players aren’t performing well, their team tends to lose matches,” stated Unadkat.

‘Ideas taking center stage in IPL 2025’

Unadkat mentioned that achieving scores over 200 multiple times last season instilled a benchmark for SRH in the IPL. Nevertheless, he noted that this strategy cannot remain constant since opposing teams are improving their tactics to combat it effectively.

Unadkat mentioned that the pitches offered this season have presented greater challenges compared to the relatively easy, flat ones from before.

“Last season, we managed over 200 runs in four or five games, which made us feel like we’d established a benchmark. However, maintaining that level consistently isn’t feasible. Now, rival teams and batsmen have improved their game plans, while our bowlers are devising fresh tactics as well. In previous years, just swinging the ball could create significant effects; however, this year success hinges on utilizing various techniques adeptly. Additionally, the nature of the wickets has played a crucial part. We faced many even surfaces last year, but so far this term, we’ve encountered tougher conditions. This explains why we haven’t sustained the same pace forward,” stated Unadkat.

Unadkat finished by stating that the bowlers must consistently improve, regardless of whether the batsmen have accumulated a significant total.

“I similarly believe that the recent match averages have increased across the board. The previous season saw an exceptionally robust batting lineup, resulting in higher scores. However, ultimately, securing victories trumps accumulating large totals. Regardless of whether we reach 200 runs, it’s the bowlers’ duty to protect that lead. This aspect holds greater significance,” stated Unadkat.

Although SRH still holds out for a chance at the playoffs

It appears that the IPL season is winding down for the team that was in the finals last year. They are set to play against DC on Monday, May 5th.
