These summertime skincare fads inspired by Asian beauty will dominate both your social media feeds and your storage spaces.

When it comes to the top summer skincare trends
for 2025
—particularly those that are fuelled by Japanese and Korean beauty obsessives—it’s not so much about newness, but about adapting routines and shifting priorities for the warmer weather. That’s according to Asian beauty expert
Gillian Liu
, who watches trends develop as the co-founder and chief marketing officer of Canadian J- and K-beauty retailer
Kiyoko Beauty
She also generates virally shared material for her
brand’s TikTok account
, so she keenly understands what is driving her customers. That’s why we Liu to share her top Asian beauty-inspired skincare trends that are set to take over in the coming months. Read on to discover what she is forecasting.

Summer Skincare Trend: Hyperpigmentation Products

Dark spots and brightening are two areas that are often at the top of mind for many skin lovers, but Liu says she’s noticed that they’ve become even more of focus during the sunny summer months. Vitamin C and niacinamide are, of course, well-known and proven go-tos, but tranexamic acid (also known as TXA) and arbutin, two gentle hyperpigmentation-fighting ingredients, are also on the rise. “All of these ingredients are great for brightening, and are found in different formulations and different serums that are meant for different skin types,” Liu says, adding that you don’t need to incorporate

Among these, incorporate elements into your summer skincare regimen; the key aspect is comprehending your skin’s requirements.

Summer Skincare Trend: SPF

Of course

, we’re all
wearing sunscreen everyday
, irrespective of the season and weather conditions, correct? However, it’s quite reasonable for you to pay closer attention to your sunscreen use during summertime. If you follow #SkinTok, you’ll notice that Korean and Japanese sunscreens are very popular, but according to Liu, Kiyoko and other Canadian stores face restrictions on the products they can stock.

Therefore, you might not find the latest, trendiest, and most talked-about AsianSPF products at Kiyoko; however, the limited range they offer is quite popular and definitely worth exploring if you’re still looking for your ideal sunscreen product.

To ensure effectiveness—reapply as needed. According to Liu, Asian sunscreens are favored due to their light consistency and lower cost. “Korean sunscreens typically offer an SPF of 50,” she notes, providing comprehensive UV protection. Additionally, some use physical blockers which can be beneficial for those with sensitive skin; however, these may create a visible white residue upon application. Thus, how you apply such products is crucial—they should be gently patted onto the skin instead of rubbed in.

Summer Skin Care Trend: Oil Cleansing

Regular makeup users are probably quite acquainted with the idea of double cleansing—a two-step process where you wash your face twice nightly, starting with an oil or balm cleanser followed by your standard water-based cleanser. However, Liu observes increased curiosity about this technique during summertime due to high temperatures and humidity levels. “Individuals prone to oily skin often seek out additional solutions to control sebum production throughout the warmer season,” explains Liu. He adds, “We advise those dealing with oily skin or congested pores to begin with an oil cleanse—it might seem contradictory, yet oils effectively clean away other oil-related impurities.” This method forms a core part of Asian skincare routines. Adding this simple step to one’s regimen can benefit every type of skin, making it easier to eliminate multiple layers of makeup and sun protection after enduring a humid, perspiring day.

Summer Bonus Skincare Trend: Korean Toner Techniques

If your skincare regimen includes just a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen, you likely don’t require additional products. However, if you wish to venture into more advanced territory, particularly within the world of K-beauty, Liu advises incorporating an acclaimed toner into your collection this season. “There are numerous types of toners available; some offer hydration, others address particular skin issues, and still others help prepare your skin to soak up following treatments,” explains Liu. Toners typically appear as liquids, yet single-use soaked sheets known as Korean toner pads have gained traction in Canadian markets recently. Choose a formulation tailored to your individual requirements, such as exfoliating properties, calming irritation, or something else entirely. Should you decide on using toner pads, Liu shares a summertime tip: store these pads in the refrigerator. When needed, apply several chilled ones onto areas like your forehead and cheeks, leaving them there for about five to ten minutes for a refreshing mask-like experience.
