Suspect Charged, Second Still Sought in Long-Weekend Homicide Case

A 20-year-old man who died from a gunshot wound over the May long weekend has been declared as Saskatoon’s third homicide of 2025.

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) responded to a report of a “person suffering from a gunshot wound” at a motel on the 2000 block of Avenue B North around 5 a.m. Saturday morning, according to a police release later that morning.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital but “succumbed to his injuries,” the department said.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to this incident, SPS said. A second man, 26-year-old Lawrence Opikokew, is “still outstanding and considered armed and dangerous,” according to police.

Police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating Opikokew. He is described as Indigenous, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, with short black hair and brown eyes. SPS said

anyone with information on his location is asked to contact Saskatoon Police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The SPS Major Crime Section is investigating the homicide.
