The Alberta Royal Canadian Mounted Police have apprehended three individuals following a police pursuit on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.
On Wednesday night, the RCMP was alerted about a man who had brandished a firearm at another individual while operating a vehicle taken without permission within the boundaries of the First Nation. The Cochrane RCMP unit, together with support from an RCMP helicopter and canine division, were dispatched to handle the situation.
Shortly after locating the truck, the suspect driver charged directly at a police car, forcing an officer to veer off onto a side ditch, according to an RCMP statement released on Friday. Following this incident, the officer used a tire-deflating tool, which disabled three of the suspect’s tires.
The motorist escaped into the forest, whereas the remaining two individuals inside the car were apprehended by law enforcement. The driver was found and taken into custody following a collaborative operation conducted by the police responders.
The police examined the car and found a rifle, bear spray, metal knuckles, and illegal narcotics.
Andrew Pooreagle, aged 38, who resides in the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, faced 36 charges which encompassed multiple firearms and weapon violations, violation of a release condition, being in possession of stolen goods, as well as numerous offenses related to vehicles and driving.
Pooreagle underwent a bail hearing and was placed back into custody.
Jackson Wesley, aged 35, who resides in the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, faced a combined total of 19 charges. The accusations against him encompassed possession of stolen goods, several counts related to firearms and weapons, as well as violation of a release condition.
Wesley was similarly subjected to a bail hearing and kept in custody.
Wesley and Pooreagle both have appearances scheduled at the Alberta Court of Justice in Cochrane on Monday.
A young person, whose identity remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been taken into custody and scheduled for a bail hearing. This individual faces 11 charges such as possessing a weapon with intent to endanger others, carrying an illegal firearm, and obstructing justice. The juvenile accused was let go but must adhere to certain stipulations and is set to make another appearance at the Alberta Provincial Court in Cochrane sometime this month.
