On Friday evening, history will be created with the first official boxing matches taking place in Times Square. The event, known as Fatal Fury: Times Square, consists of a three-fight card scheduled for Friday, May 2nd, right in the heart of Manhattan’s Times Square.

Rather than opting for Madison Square Garden or the Barclays Center, they chose to close off part of Times Square. They constructed a boxing ring and set up lighting to host the entire event outdoors on the streets. This choice seemed puzzling from the beginning due to the typically bustling nature of Times Square.

Nevertheless, an intriguing aspect of the boxing match was that it took place right in the heart of Times Square, allowing random spectators walking by to potentially catch a glimpse. However, when the event actually occurred, barriers were set up around the ring area. While this approach is justified from a safety standpoint, it somewhat contradicts the idea of casual observers easily viewing the proceedings.

Here’s additional information about the boxing ring installed in Times Square for the Ryan Garcia versus Devin Haney event.

What led to the construction of the boxing ring in Times Square?

The boxing ring was constructed precisely at the heart of Times Square, the same spot where the New Year’s Eve ball descends.

What’s intriguing is that although entry to seats close to the ring was invitation-only, a transparent fence was anticipated for security purposes. The idea was that this fence would allow passersby to still have visibility.

Before the bout on Friday, there was a red banner hung on the fence that obscured the view.
